An Updated Estimate of the Indonesian Throughflow Geostrophic Transport: Interannual Variability and Salinity Effect

چکیده
While the pivotal role of Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) in global ocean circulation and climate has been widely recognized, accurate estimation its volume transport based on observational data remains challenging. This work provides an updated estimate monthly ITF geostrophic (ITFG) upper 700 m at IX1 section between Indonesia Australia. The ITFG is better constrained by improved correction new salinity products. mean 1993–2018 8.2 ± 0.2 Sv, which contributions temperature components (ITFT ITFS) are 5.5 2.8 0.1 respectively. interannual variability (∼4.4 Sv standard deviation) dominated ITFT, as result wind-driven thermocline dynamics, slightly attenuated amplitude ITFS. strengthening trend 1.33 decade−1 during primarily arises from ITFS secondarily ITFT.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On the Interannual Variability of the Indonesian Throughflow and Its Linkage with ENSO
The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) variability is assessed using a retrospective analysis of the global ocean based on the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) experiment spanning the period 1950–99. A comparison between the 1983–95 observed ITF, and the simulated ITF suggests a reasonably accurate reconstruction of ocean circulation in the vicinity of the ITF during the available measurement re...
متن کاملThe Indonesian throughflow, its variability and centennial change
The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is an important component of the upper cell of the global overturning circulation that provides a low-latitude pathway for warm, fresh waters from the Pacific to enter the Indian Ocean. Variability and changes of the ITF have significant impacts on Indo-Pacific oceanography and global climate. In this paper, the observed features of the ITF and its interannual t...
متن کاملPathways of Intraseasonal Variability in the Indonesian Throughflow Region
The recent INSTANT measurements in the Indonesian archipelago revealed a broad spectrum of time scales that influence Throughflow variability, from intraseasonal (20-90 days) to interannual. The different time scales are visible in all transport and property fluxes and are the result of remote forcing by both the Pacific and Indian Ocean winds, and local forcing generated within the regional In...
متن کاملIODP Expedition 356: Indonesian Throughflow
Week 6 of Expedition 356 (Indonesian Throughflow) consisted of completing operations at Site U1462 (including another successful downhole logging deployment in Hole U1462C) and the start of operations at Site U1463 (proposed site NWS-2A). The science party was able to finalize all outstanding reports from Site U1461, particularly downhole logging and stratigraphic correlation, and begin finaliz...
متن کاملSouth China Sea throughflow impact on the Indonesian throughflow
[1] In 2008–2009 the Makassar throughflow profile changed dramatically: the characteristic thermocline velocity maximum increased from 0.7 to 0.9 m/sec and shifted from 140 m to 70 m, amounting to a 47% increase in the transport of warmer water between 50 and 150 m during the boreal summer. HYCOM output indicates that ENSO induced change of the South China Sea (SCS) throughflow into the Indones...
